HBMC Module 1 Part 2

HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT

The Human Development and Its Stages

WHAT IS HUMAN DEVELOPMENT?

IT IS DEFINED AS….

  • The Scientific study of processes of change and stability of human beings from conception until death

  • Systematic changes and continuities in the individual that occur between conception and death, or from the womb to tomb

  • The systematic changes and continuities fall into three broad domains:

    • PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT; GROWTH OF THE BODY
    • COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT; CHANGES IN PERCEPTION, LANGUAGE, AND MEMORY;
    • PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT; MOTIVES, PERSONALITY TRAITS, INTERPERSONAL SKILL, AND RELATIONSHIP

The growth of the man goes at the same time as the growth of the discipline.

A pioneering American Psychologist and founder of the field of DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY explained the nature-nurture (behavioral genetics) debate in the development of man. He made explained whether inherited or environmental factors predominate in the process of man’s growth. (G Stanley Hall)

On the other hand, John B.  Watson held that environment is the dominant factor in the development of man and the child could be transformed into almost any person.

On the other hand, more biologically oriented proponents like Arnold Gessel insisted that there must always be an interaction between heredity and the environment. These experts believed that “though environmental factors modulate and inflect”, they do not determine the progression of human development.

THE PSYCHOANALYTICAL THEORY & MAN'S DEVELOPMENT

All these theories paved the way for the development of the study of CHILD DEVELOPMENT.

The founder of Psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, and his followers insisted that MOST ABERRANT CHILD BEHAVIORS ARE CAUSED BY MISHANDLING ON THE PART OF THE PARENTS while Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget supported the concept that regardless of environmental factors, man’s thinking developed through patterned states.

THE SOMATOTYPING & MAN'S DEVELOPMENT

Theories about different personality types of man also developed over the years. An attempt to classify these personality types in a systematic way was first proposed by the American psychologist WILLIAM SHELDON. The “constitutional psychology” he proposed was known as “somatotyping”  and describes the kind of behavior to be expected of individuals that falls into three (3) main physical types whom he identified as

  1. round (endomorph);
  2. strongly built (mesomorph), and
  3. spindly (ectomorph).

Though many contradicted this theory, somatotyping can sometimes help in predicting the types of behavior and personality of an individual.

The above literature is an eye-opener for all of us to clearly define and analyze how human behavior is composed of. Whether it is a total contribution of the heredity, environment, or genetic composition of man.

This only means that our capability to read one man's mind in the Philippines is in its infantile stage because even psychologist does not actually enter into this realm, and very little local literature giving us a clear idea(s) on how to GUIDE US ABOUT HUMAN AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.

The preceding topics will greatly enhance the capability and skills of those who are interested in learning and understanding human behavior and apply it in the realms of public safety and in the administration of justice. But before delving into the next topic, let's take a look at our MAJOR TAKEAWAYS IN THIS TOPIC.

YOUR TAKEAWAYS:

USING THE TABLE BELOW, PROVIDE A MEASUREMENT OR DEGREE OF  INFLUENCE OF THE HEREDITARY, ENVIRONMENTAL AND GENETIC FACTOR TO MAN’S DEVELOPMENT BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE & OBSERVATION & BE ABLE ALSO TO INDICATE THE DEGREE OF LOGARITHMIC (SLOW) & EXPONENTIAL (FAST) INFLUENCE. (Not based on what you hade read, this is a practice for you to become a practical behavioral scientist) YOU can consider yourself first as your "experimental subject" TOWARDS this takeaway so this is an individual activity.

Then make a brainstorming with your group and consider your classmate or your neighbor as a subject. USING THE SAME TABLE TO DESCRIBE THE SAME DEGREE OF INFLUENCE and this is your second work which is by "GROUP". Use the example below as a template for doing these takeaways. For purposes of convenience, the group leader must consolidate the individual assignment and submit it as one to my email.

EXAMPLE:

Let's say (Birth-Toddler) 0-3 yrs old 96% of human development was derived from the offspring hereditarily,  and only 1% from the environment and 3% from genetics (the biological composition of the child) and so on.

Establish also the age where both heredity and environment is almost equal based on your experience and observation and have it explain (this is now by the group)

You can post your question if you have a question or query, or through your group leader through my cap number.
