Explain the Concept of Fire and Combustion
The Concepts and Principles of Fire
This chapter is the very introduction to fire investigations. It provides the learner with a basic overview of the chemistry and dynamics of fire how and why investigations are conducted, fire scene safety, the collection of evidence, and a discussion of arson enforcement resources.
Becoming a professional fire investigator today requires an increasing amount of training, education, and experience.
This course does not attempt to address all aspects of fire investigation; however, it will provide the learner with the basic tools to operate as a member of an investigative team at a fire scene and to be conversant with a local fire investigator when discussing an investigation.
There are many books, publications, articles, and other resources that address fire investigations; these should be consulted for more detailed information in this field. Additionally, it should be noted that for the purposes of this course the discussions are relevant to investigating structure fires.
Fire and arson investigators examine the physical attributes of a fire scene and identify and collect physical evidence from the scene. This evidence is then analyzed to help determine if the cause of the fire was accidental or deliberate. During the scene examination, investigators may find evidence such as accelerants, tampered utilities, and specific burn patterns, which may indicate criminal activity.
However, all those mentioned above will not be sufficient unless we understand the different terms useful in understanding the chemistry and behavior of fire. And this is the objective of this part of the course.
I am inviting you therefore to watch and listen to our video presentation below and define FIRE, COMBUSTIBLE, FLAMMABLE & INFLAMMABLE MATERIALS!
